Blooming in Breisach am Rhein

Breisach upon Rhine – Situated Between the Black Forest and Alsace

Breisach is one of Germany’s oldest towns.

The historic part around the famous cathedral St. Stephansmünster is situated on a hill above the Rhine River. This strategic point is the main reason why there has been a permanent settlement for more than 4,000 years.

Take a stroll over the hill and discover the traces of the Celtic, Roman, French, and Austrian populations of the past.

Historic Views and Cultural Highlights

Enjoy the views from the cathedral terrace or the Franciscan monastery garden. From here, you can see:

  • The Black Forest
  • The vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl
  • The Vosges Mountains

Extend your tour with a visit to the Museum of City History, which is situated in a building erected as a triumphal arch for the Sun King of France.

Breisach as a European City

Breisach is titled a “European City” and regards itself as a link between Germany and France, particularly between the Black Forest and Alsace.

It is a good starting point for excursions by car or public transport to many interesting destinations, including:

  • Kaiserstuhl
  • Colmar
  • Strasbourg
  • Basel
  • Freiburg
  • Titisee

Breisach is also a popular stopover for cruise ships travelling between Amsterdam and Basle.

Wine, Vineyards, and Culinary Experiences

Wine lovers shouldn’t miss a visit to one of the local wineries.

  • Badischer Winzerkeller, one of the largest wineries in Germany, offers tours through its impressive wooden barrel cellar.
  • The Geldermann private sparkling wine cellar produces sparkling wine using the traditional bottle fermentation process directly below the Breisacher Münsterberg.

Outdoor Activities: Hiking and Cycling

From spring to autumn, the vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg are a paradise for hiking tours. Several themed trails allow visitors to discover the area’s unique flora and fauna.

For cyclists, many tours of varying lengths and difficulty levels are available, including routes that cross into France. A particularly popular route is EuroVelo 15, which runs along the Rhine River.
